Guilt Trip
Padraig O’Sullivan: Rotoscope Animator, Compositing, 3D Blender, Filming
My FYP is a silent film about a young man called Dermot trying to overcome his addiction to alcohol. However, he is haunted by the ghost of his niece Denyce whom he accidentally ran over while drink driving. Denyce is a depiction of the guilt he has because of his addiction. Dermot is also visited by his old friend Adam. He has not seen Adam for a long time, and all seems well.
However, Adam does not support Dermot’s decision to stop drinking and tries to convince Dermot to drink a bottle of alcohol he had bought him. Dermot’s struggle to remain sober is fueled by the promise he makes to his family that he will stay away from alcohol for a month and then he can reconnect with them. This project is mainly a live action film with an animated rotoscope scene as a flashback method. The goal for this film is to pay tribute to the old school film narrative techniques used in 1920s silent films like Nosferatu (1922), Dr. Caligari (1920), Faust (1926), and Der Golem (1920). Instead of using dialogue and other sounds, these films used Intertitles to convey what was being said on screen.
