Vampire Crab Terrarium
Kaitlyn A. Cotey: Creator
This project is centered around creating a terrarium featuring a vampire crab as it’s star centerpiece. Terrarium’s are know for both their unique beauty and self-contained miniature enclosed ecosystems that can be customized by featuring carefully chosen plants, substrate, and decorative elements. Additionally, vampire crabs are fascinating creatures with their captivating appearance and terrestrial lifestyle, making them both the perfect and unique choice to exhibit within this equally exotic and carefully designed habitat. The terrarium will feature a habitat that includes a mix of land and shallow water and substrate such as coconut coir or peat moss. I have chosen this project, specifically because I believe it is the perfect way to display a wide variety of skills and fundamentals within a strong portfolio piece. I plan to challenge myself by creating a stylized environment that features several different plants, textures, and props within the scene along with displaying VFX through the water simulations within the terrarium. Since the vampire crab is also very colourful and will greatly add to the overarching tone of the piece while still being a simple creature to model and potentially rig. This will also be done in Blender as I haven’t worked in this software before, my goal is to develop skills to make me as marketable as possible and due to the fact most of my experience comes from within Maya I decided this would be the perfect opportunity to challenge myself and my existing skill sets. The piece will be a few seconds in length, considering the existing tests for render times I plan to have a main still shot with the crabs in the scene walking & the water running. If possible I will include shots from other angles but there will be at least one main shot capturing the piece.
